This book was amazing. I stumbled across this reading George Martin's blog and some of his suggested reads. Ian Tregillis writes an exciting tale of an alternate history where the French government is on the run and the English rule the world with armies and servants of mechanical men. Classifying this sci-fi as Alternate History Steampunk glosses over the profound evolution of free thinking that projects the main character in a quest to discover if his people can have souls. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.Also George Martin needs to stop reading awesome books and commenting on sci-fi lit politics and finish the god-damn series he started in '91.
